The staggering amount of wasted food not only impacts food security but also contributes to resource depletion and climate change. That’s why we are excited to announce our commitment to becoming a U.S. Food Loss and Waste 2030 Champion.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) set an ambitious goal in 2015: to achieve a 50 percent reduction in food loss and waste by 2030.

By becoming a Food Loss Champion, we align ourselves with other leaders across the food chain who share the same vision and commitment. Together, we can drive change, raise awareness, and create a ripple effect that leads to a more resilient and responsible food system for generations to come.

Food Insecurity in America

Map the Meal Gap shows that food insecurity exists in every county and congressional district in the U.S., though the prevalence of food insecurity varies significantly across populations and places. Addressing Food Waste

In the United States, food waste is estimated at between 30–40 percent of the food supply. This figure, based on estimates from USDA’s Economic Research Service of 31 percent food loss at the retail and consumer levels, corresponded to approximately 133 billion pounds and $161 billion worth of food in 2010. Food is the single largest category of material placed in municipal landfills and represents wasted nourishment that could have helped feed families in need. Additionally, water, energy, and labor used to produce wasted food could have been employed for other purposes.

Food Product Dating and
Food Waste

Food waste by consumers may result from a misunderstanding of what the phrases on product date labels mean, along with uncertainty about storage of perishable foods. Confusion over date labeling accounts for an estimated 20 percent of consumer food waste.
